Exciting new details on Battlefield 4 vehicles
Vehicles will feature more unlocks, custom decal designs, and "disabled vehicles" has been replaced with a "critical hit" feature.
September 13th, 2013 IN News
LINK

DICE has revealed a ton of exciting new details on Battlefield 4 vehicles, outlining many of the new features found in the game.

For starters, and as we know, Battlefield 4 will feature a vehicle test range, where players will be able to test out and learn to drive/fly/operate all of the vehicles featured in the game. All vehicles will get more unlocks compared to BF3, and will feature camos and custom decal designs as well.

Finally, real naval combat

In Battlefield 4, naval combat finally makes a big appearance. Unlike previous games in the series, where naval combat was limited to a rubber boat with a machine gun, Battlefield 4 will feature real attack boats that are just as powerful as their land based counterparts, the tanks and APCs. In fact, boats will be some of the most versatile vehicles, having the capability to engage both infantry, land vehicles, and air vehicles as well. DICE goes as far as to call some of the attack boats “tanks on water”.

In addition to attack boats, Battlefield 4 will feature jet skis (or Personal Water Craft), and the trusted RHIB transport boats.

More vehicle customization

All vehicles in the game will be more customizable as well. For one, players will be able to create their own decals to place on vehicles, but all vehicles are set to feature more weapon unlocks as well. For example the mobile AAs such as the LAV-AD and the Tunguska will have different AA missiles, some meant for short range against helicopters, other for long range against jets.

Tanks and other vehicles now have an extra customization slot, where one slot deals with the main weapon, another with optics, and a third with countermeasures. This way, players don’t have to choose between optics or countermeasures.

No more “disabled vehicles”

In BF3, vehicles could be “disabled” after a certain amount of hits, rendering them immobile and practically useless unless there was an Engineer nearby. This has been replaced with a new feature called “critical hit”. When a vehicle takes a direct, high damage hit, it will be counted as a “critical hit”, which will briefly, for a few seconds, render the vehicle immobile. This will depend on where the vehicle is hit.
Two types of jets in the game

Finally, the Battlefield 4 jets have been split into two categories: standard attack jets with focus on air to ground combat, and stealth jets, with focus on air to air combat. The two types will have their own set of unlocks to match their new combat roles. This will add another layer of tactical combat to the gameplay, and should help against some of the “do it all” overpowered jets found in the previous game.

Battlefield 4 – Vehiclular Warfare In Detail
David Veselka September 13, 2013
LINK

Battlefield 4 will let you dominate from the land, sea, or air when you get your hands on the game this October 29. But what exactly is so ‘new’ about the way DICE is handling vehicles this time around?

In the latest Battlefield Blog entry, DICE lays it all on the table and shows you exactly how vehicles have been tweaked, altered or upgraded and explains some of the new vehicles and features you can look forward to this fall.

In Battlefield 4, players will have access to a number of amphibious vehicles, introducing a whole new perspective on all out war. You’ll be able to get behind the wheel of attack boats like the heavily armored RCB-90 patrol boat, transport infantry using the RHIB, or move around the map quickly with a Personal Water Craft (PWC).

The attack boat is unique in that not only can infantry spawn in it while it patrols the shore lines, but it also harbors two PWCs that can be used for a quick escape if things start to get ugly.

Tanks now have more customization options that aren’t as limiting as in games like Battlefield 3. Instead of featuring only three customization slots; secondary weapons, gadgets and upgrades, the gadget slot on a tank is now split into two, meaning you can equip both an optic and a countermeasure at the same time. There is now also room to customize your primary weapon, including different ammo types and mechanics.

Air vehicles have been tweaked so that their roles are now more clearly defined. In Battlefield 4, you’ll find two types of jets; the stealth jet, who is more adept at taking out other aerial vehicles, and the fighter jet, who is more effective at assaulting ground targets.

Helicopters will offer three different roles; the scout helicopter is fast, mobile and effective against infantry and lightly armored vehicles, the attack helicopter will devastate heavily armored vehicles, while the transport helicopter is the ultimate team play vehicle.

With the introduction of so many new vehicles, anti-air vehicles are getting a bit of an upgrade when it comes to their defensive measures. AA vehicles will now have access to a wider range of missiles in the secondary weapon slot, allowing you to fine tune your effectiveness against the varied amount of vehicles types.

Much like the weapons of Battlefield 4, all vehicles can be customizes with various camoflauge patterns, including adaptive camo patterns.

Vehicle damage has been significantly re-tuned for Battlefield 4. Rather than being disabled after a certain amount of “health” is taken off your vehicle and being faced with the choice of either bailing or waiting for an Engineer, you will now be disabled for only a short period of time, depending on the severity of an attack. If the damage of a single attack high enough, the “Critical” attack will disable you, but only for a temporary amount of time. No longer does it mean certain death (degenerating health).

Lastly, the damage model on tanks, which has been left, for the most part, untouched from Battlefield 3, does have a newly added “top” zone which takes significant damage from weapons like the FGM-148 (Javelin) and vehicle-based laser guided missiles. Otherwise, damage is still dependant on angle and whether or not the blow is glancing or direct.

Looks like there’s a lot to get a hang of in Battlefield 4 when it comes to vehicles! Luckily, you’ll be able to visit the game’s new Test Range to get a good feel for all the vehicles and become more proficient. Read more about vehicular warfare in Battlefield 4 right here.

All Battlefield 4 field upgrades revealed
Complete breakdown of all the field upgrades and perks found in the game.
September 14th, 2013
LINK

Instead of specializations, Battlefield 4 will feature a brand new upgrade and perk system, called Field Upgrades. The field upgrades in the game are based on how well the player and his squad perform on the battlefield. The better they’re doing, the quicker they level up in their upgrade tree.

There are a number of field upgrades available, from extra ammo, to faster sprint, to better armor. These are then grouped in different categories. For example, the “Defensive” field upgrade path starts with extra armor as Level 1, then moves on to reduced suppression at Level 2, to Flak as Level 3, and finally, quicker health regen as Level 4.

Players can chose between 11 different Battlefield 4 field upgrades, each consisting of 4 levels of unlocks. Here is the complete list of the upgrades:

List of Battlefield 4 field upgrade paths

Defensive: Armor – Cover – Flak – Quick regen
Offensive: Print – Ammo – Grenades – Reduced Fall
Shadow: Quick unspot – Sprint – Reduced Fall – Stealth
Combat Medic: Medkit upgrade – Sprint – Defibrillator upgrade – Medical Unit
Grenadier: Grenades – Sprint – 40mm grenades – Flak
Anti-tank: Mines – Rockets – More deployed explosives – Flak
Mechanic: Fast repair – Flak – Cover – Repair unit
Indirect fire: Ammo box upgrade – Ammo – Indirect fire – Resupply unit
Perimeter defense: Ammo – Suppression – Claymores – MP-APS upgrade
Spec Ops: Stealth – C4 Explosives – Motion sensors – Quick unspot
Sniper: Hold breath – Cover – Quick Unspot – Advanced spot

As you can see, some of the most popular perks are recycled between the different upgrade paths, such as sprint and ammo. Players can chose whichever upgrade path they wish, and these will individually progress throughout the match for each player in the squad. However, should the squad be eliminated (all players in the squad are dead at the same time), the field upgrades will reset to level 1.

For a detailed explanation on the different field upgrades, check out the images below:

A closer look at the new Battlefield 4 maps
A closer look at all the new maps featured in the latest multiplayer trailer.
September 19th, 2013
LINK

SPECIAL NOTE: Documenting the 8 New Maps in the New Trailer.

The latest multiplayer trailer gave us a few good glimpses of the other Battlefield 4 maps and settings. Taking a closer look at the trailer revealed some of those maps in detail. In all, 8 different maps were showcased in the trailer (Battlefield 4 launches with 10 maps). The map settings range from urban, to desert, to jungle, and more.

Check out the new BF4 screenshots below and an analysis of the new maps. Click the images for a larger view.

Operation Locker is the snow covered Battlefield 4 map we saw during the Battlelog trailer a few weeks ago. It’s a linear map with snowy exteriors and also interiors that take place in a large cave / mine. It reminds us a lot of the Damavand Peak map from BF3. It also seems to have a cool “frost” effect added to the HUD.

The “flood / dam map” as seen in the new trailer: it has urban environments which can be flooded with water. Also, it’s set in China (as seen on the building signs).

Another dam map was showcased, but this one did not have any water — just a wall collapsing. This is likely the map we saw in the Commander post last month.

Arecibo-style telescope map features a large telescope similar to the famous Arecibo Observatory. This is likely a much larger telescope that currently under construction in China. Players will be able to move both on the surface of the telescope, and beneath it, which features some lush vegetation.

Other maps showcased include a very large, open map with a lot of vehicles, including jets, tanks, helicopters, and more.

EA “won’t give up until Battlefield is number one”
EA and DICE won't give up until Battlefield beats Call of Duty and is the number one FPS franchise.
LINK

Battlefield 4 salesThe ongoing battle between EA’s Battlefield and Activision’s Call of Duty franchises has culminated each Fall over the past few years. Activision has had the top FPS for a while with Call of Duty, but 2011′s BF3 really challenged that.

The upcoming Battlefield 4 is going head to head against Call of Duty Ghosts, and so far, as far as pre-orders are concerned, Battlefield 4 is winning the match.

EA Games executive VP Patrick Soderlund — who was previously a Battlefield producer at DICE — says that EA takes the battle against Call of Duty seriously, and that they won’t give up until it’s the top FPS franchise in the world.

Speaking to MCV, Soderlund said that competition in the industry is good, but added:

“Maybe they (Activision) weren’t thinking about us much when we made BF3, but I can tell you, they are thinking about us now. We made a dent in the FPS market and we took share from them. And I am not going to give up until I’m No.1″

BF3 has sold almost 20 million units to date, compared to Call of Duty 2 Black Ops, which sold 24 million. With Premium and all the expansion packs, BF3 became the top grossing EA game in many years, and Battlefield 4 will surely build on that. EA has confirmed that Battlefield 4 premium will be available at launch, and they plan on releasing 5 DLC packs over the next 2 years.

For good fun, check out the Battlefield vs Call of Duty players article. Battlefield 4 launches at the end of October on all major platforms: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Call of Duty Ghosts launches a couple of weeks later.

Battlefield 4 details asynchronous Mission challenges
by Steve Watts, Sep 23, 2013
LINK

A new version of Battlefield naturally means a new version of its surrounding support structures, like the 'Battlelog' social layer that launched with BF3. DICE has outlined the changes coming to Battlefield 4's iteration in a lengthy Battlefield Blog post, including giving more detail on the asynchronous 'Missions' you can set for your friends.

Missions are challenges which let you compete with friends even when you're not all on at once. You can create a mission by setting objectives outside the usual perimeters, and have up to four friends compete to earn them. Once you've set an objective and a map, you can set the amount of attempts your friends will get. From there, they'll have 48 hours to complete it. The Battlelog will alert you when you're invited to an event, including on the new mobile app, to make sure you don't miss an invite. The mobile app can also be used to create missions on the fly.

DICE doesn't mention any particular awards to competing in missions aside from bragging rights, but it says it will be adding new selectable objectives as time goes on.
