While console gamers everywhere are focused on the upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this season, console transitions are actually a great time to play catch-up by picking up old hardware at rock-bottom prices. Case in point: GameStop's announcement today that preowned Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 systems will be offered at extremely low prices during a promotion running this month.

From October 11 through October 24, you can pick up an old-fashioned, large Xbox 360 for $99 (down from $129, though a hard drive is not included), or one of those new-fangled Slim models with 4GB of onboard storage for $119 (down from $179). Better yet, GameStop is selling every single preowned PlayStation 3 in its inventory for $149. That includes the 500GB Slim systems that usually sell for $259 used, so track them down before they're sold out at their much-reduced price.

As if that weren't enough, anyone who buys a used console during the promotion will get a preowned game worth up to $20 for free. That price point includes a whole lot of excellent exclusives that you may have missed out on if you skipped one console or the other this generation.

Yes, prices on these systems will probably bottom out even further in the next year or two, but this holiday season probably represents an inflection point where the low cost of hardware meets up with a well-developed legacy library of cheap software exclusives. Conversely, early adopters of the new generation of systems will be paying the highest possible price for hardware alongside the smallest possible lineup of $59.99 (and up) software, primarily for the privilege of games that look a bit shinier. That's something to keep in mind if you're looking to budget your console gaming dollars this holiday season.
